Do You Require A System, Combination Or Regular Boiler?

Whatever Boiler you choose, you then need to decide on a Regular, System or Combination style boiler.

The style may already be predecided for you if we are doing a straight in and out boiler replacement (removing your old Boiler and fitting a new one in its place to work with your current central heating components, the most common type of Boiler installation).

So what’s the difference between these Boiler types?

Regular Boilers

In years gone by, Regular Boilers were the most common Boilers found in homes across the UK.

Regular Boilers work on gravity utilising water tanks located at the highest possible level in the home (typically the loft). These tanks regulate the system by keeping it filled with water all the time.

A regular system also includes an unpressurised water cylinder which acts as storage for hot water for the taps, and a pump to circulate hot water around the central heating system.

Regular systems are good for supplying extra large properties with multiple bathrooms.

Regular Boilers are commonly fitted in homes with an existing regular system.

System Boilers

Like a regular Boilers system, Boilers utilise a hot water cylinder. The difference is the cylinder’s pressurised and doesn’t require bulky water tanks.

The pressurised cylinder stores hot water heated by the Boiler and distributes the hot water to the kitchens and bathrooms of the property at a satisfying pressure that’s higher than the mains pressure.

System Boilers are the best choice for regular to large-sized homes, those with 3-5 bedrooms.

If you have an old ‘Regular’ Boiler and system, we can remove the old unpressurised cylinder and water tanks and modify them to accept a system Boiler and pressurised cylinder. You’ll appreciate the increased hot water pressure in your taps and shower.

Immersion heaters are fitted to new cylinders to act as a backup water heater in the event of a Boiler breakdown. So you may be without heating, but at least you still have a supply of hot water.

combi-boilers

Combi Boilers

The Combination Boiler is the most common Boler fitted in small to medium-sized homes. They can even work in larger homes.

Combination Boilers have everything built-in. They heat hot water when required in an instant. The heating element is activated upon the detection of flowing water (when you turn on the hot tap or shower).

Combination Boilers don’t utilise hot water cylinders, so they take up little space.

A Combination Boiler installation is the simplest type of installation and the cheapest. They are also the easiest of Boilers to maintain and service.

The only disadvantage is they are sub-optimal for homes with multiple bathrooms, and if the Boiler fails, there’s no backup hot water supply.

Boiler Sizes

All the above Boilers are available in different sizes. Our engineer will determine the best size Boiler for your home.

The correct size must be selected when installing a new Boiler.

  • Too small, and you won’t have enough capacity to serve your radiators and hot water outlets
  • Too big, and you waste money on the Boiler purchase and wasted energy, creating more heat than the system can use

The Boiler size will be picked according to the number of radiators and bathrooms you have.

High-Efficiency Modern Boilers

All Boilers installed by TM Hughes & Son are available to work with gas, electric, oil or LPG.

All Boilers fitted are modern condensing Boilers which range in efficiency levels of 90-99% (depending on make and model of Boiler fitted.

The modern condensing Boiler captures escaping gasses in the flue and recycles them to heat water, saving energy and money.

Old Boilers have been found to run as low as 55% efficiency. So that 45% of the fuel burned is wasted.

As you can see, a new Boiler installation will save you money on your energy bills and will be far less likely to break down, which will likely mean costly repairs.
